Insights for Moving Forward

It’s been a whirlwind of a month, and here we are, nearly February.

I saw an email the other day titled something like ‘January was hell…’ with a plea to start the year on February 1st.

I get the sentiment. And as someone who’s wrestled with the urge to scrap it all and start over when things don’t go as planned, I’m practicing a more nuanced approach.

Yes, this month has been a lot—for many of us, it would be easier to leave it behind.

But I think there’s value in pausing our forward trajectory long enough to check in on how we’re doing and give ourselves the space to be intentional about HOW we move forward.

Reflection isn’t always fun. I mean, I don’t like seeing all the ways I didn’t work on the projects I said I wanted to prioritize, or seeing the screen time reports on my phone after a week of feeling overwhelmed.

But getting this information and gaining awareness IS powerful. It gives me the space to separate the facts from all the chatter and meaning-making in my mind.

Reflection allows us to see patterns—both subtle and profound. We begin to understand the impact of our choices, the outcomes of our actions, and what we want more (or less) of moving forward.

I have a practice of carving out time—just about 30 minutes—at the end of each month to reflect on the highs and lows of the month, how I’ve been taking care of myself (or not), and what I’m proud of.

A few things I’ve noticed:

  • I’m learning to take pride in my accomplishments, rather than just feeling relief when I finally finish something.

  • What I once saw as a major failure now offers valuable insights, especially when I look back on it with the perspective that time provides.

  • I’ve realized that I don’t always prioritize play and unstructured creativity—two things I deeply value.

Want to try this for yourself?

Here are a (more than a) few prompts to guide your reflection:

  • What are you grateful for?

  • What is something new you experienced or learned this month?

  • Which relationships and connections energized you?

  • What felt nourishing? What felt depleting?

  • What supported your well-being, and how can you invite more of that moving forward?

  • If this month had a theme or lesson for you, what would it be?

  • What are you ready to leave behind?

  • What will you carry forward?

My invitation to you…

Honor the rhythm of this season and carve out space to reflect on the big and small moments that have shaped you.

Then, choose how you want to step intentionally forward.

XO, Beth
